In the last week of June 2024, I had the privilege of giving two inspiring workshops in the beautiful greenhouse of Lekkers op Wielen (NL). The location creates a magical atmosphere: sunlight streaming through the glass walls, greenery blooming all around, and the delightful scent of fresh herbs and flowers. It felt like the perfect place to let creativity flow and to pause time for a moment.
Workshop 1: The Sisters
The first workshop was held to celebrate a birthday. A group of sister(-in-law)s chose to celebrate this day in a unique way. The workshop focused on paper and cards, accompanied by a delicious lunch and an afternoon visit to the exhibition "Papier hier" at museum De Koperen Knop. The atmosphere was warm and cozy from the start, and it was clear that the ladies were comfortable with each other. To help the group get started, I began with some simple exercises to loosen up. This is always a great way to activate creativity and step out of your head for a bit.
After these short warm-up exercises, it was time to really get to work. Everyone used their own materials and ideas, resulting in beautiful and very diverse outcomes. While one person picked up paint and brushes, another chose to work with collages or drawing, or combined multiple materials into a cohesive piece. It was lovely to see how each work told its own personal story. The greenhouse quickly filled with laughter, conversation, and deep concentration. After all, creativity flows best in a relaxed, friendly environment.
Workshop 2: Instagram Creators
The second workshop was with a group of enthusiastic women who had signed up via Instagram. This was a completely different setting: the participants didn’t know each other yet, so the beginning was always a bit exciting. But here as well, the warm-up exercises were great for getting into the flow. Conversations began to spark, and the atmosphere was very pleasant and encouraging. Since a creative task also requires some concentration, it was a nice mix of chatting and quietly working with music playing in the background.
Just like in the first workshop, after the exercises, everyone worked from their own inspiration, with the freedom to choose which materials and techniques felt best. This led to a diversity of works, from abstract pieces to collages, embroidery on paper, and watercolor art — there was no right or wrong, only pure expression of creativity.
It was remarkable to see that, despite the women not knowing each other, a sense of connection and collaboration quickly emerged. Everyone encouraged each other, offered compliments, and shared ideas.
An Inspiring Environment
What made both workshops so special was not only the creativity of the participants but also the unique location. Anja’s greenhouse exudes calm and space, allowing everyone to truly escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Phones could be set to “silent,” and all attention could focus on the creative work.
The sunbeams streaming through the glass walls, the view of the garden full of flowers and plants, and the scent of fresh herbs made everyone feel right at home. This natural environment provided an extra relaxing experience that further enhanced the creative process.
